Kumarakom bird Sanctuary
An ornithologist’s paradise, Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, located about 16Kms from Kottayam plays host to some of the most exotic migratory birds. The entire area was built by the Government for the preservation of the natural habitat of the local breeds of plants like Mandrakes or Coconut trees as well as the native birds.
Covering an area of almost 14 acres, this Bird Sanctuary exemplifies variety of birds-native as well as migratory. So, the sight of golden-backed woodpeckers, night herons, Kingfishers, paradise fly catchers and egrets is highly common. Birds from as remote a place like Siberia also gather in this lush green piece of nature hub. Local breeds like Teal, Water Duck and Cuckoo are also very fascinating in this part of the country. The enchanting beauty of nature along with the tranquilising effect of the cacophony of the birds makes the place come alive with passion and emotion.

Aruvikkuzhi Waterfalls
Located almost 18Kms from the town of Kottayam, Aruvikkuzhi waterfalls is another gem in the casket of exotic places of Kumarakom. Water here falls from a height of about 100ft and creates a beautiful jingling sound, thus adding to the beauty and natural charm of the surroundings.
Vembanad Lake
Kumarakom offers the perfect scope of a laid back holiday. The network of waterways that are part of Vembanad Lake, run across the length and breath of Kumarakom, thus forming one of the largest freshwater lakes of Asia. A sight of the rich variety of flora and fauna in the islands surrounding the Vembanad Lake is capable of leaving an onlooker enchanted and speechless. The possibilities of fishing, sauntering along in a houseboat and sightseeing are some of the concrete causes behind the rapid growth of the backwater tourism in Kumarakom.
Pathiramanal
Meaning “Sands of Midnight” in the native tongue, Pathiramanal is one of the many bewitching islands surrounding the Vembanad Lake. This island is distinguished from the others by the fact that it serves as a home to hundreds of rare species of migratory birds who wander in this heavenly abode for a few days.
